How can Employers Hire and Retain Skilled Foreign Workers?

  • May 4, 2021

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

According to recent news, the need for foreign workers has substantially increased due to the economic growth in the country and businesses getting back on track. To ease the process of hiring numerous foreign workers the Canadian government provided different types of visas based on the different requirements and a smooth permanent residency process. The government encourages foreigners to immigrate and work in the provinces of this country because it contributes to improving the economy through consumption, work and taxes.

Steps to hire

  • Get a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) proving that there is a need for the job in the organization and there isn’t an eligible Canadian worker for the current job opening. The recruiter can also get submit an “offer of employment” in which they have to pay a compliance via the “employer portal”. This portal will generate an employment number that the recruiter has to share with the foreign worker they want to hire in order for them to make a work permit
  • There are two types of work permit, in this case the one the chosen employee has to opt for os the employer specific work permit which includes important information such as: the name of the specific employer, the term of the work and the location.
  • Once the work permit application has been approved the foreign worker will receive the work permit from the border services officer, when the he/she enter the country.

After the foreign worker has been hired and has started working for a while, the employer can decide to permanently retain this worker in the organization. There are numerous ways in which the employer can retain its foreign worker.

Apply for their permanent residency in Canada, the employer can choose among the sixty permanent residency programs, the one that is appropriate to them. The most convenient program is the CEC ( Canadian Experience Class Program) in which the foreign worker should submit a detailed reference letter.

In case the foreign employee already has a permanent residency but the employer still wants to guarantee the retention of the foreign worker, the latter can provide useful trainings and mentoring sessions for the worker’s growth.

  • Training & mentoring: based on the requirements of the organization, the employer can provide different sorts of training, such as skills training, language training, cultural & communication training and organizational training. Training is important because it results in boosting the productivity and improve the employee’s abilities. Mentoring sessions are as important as training sessions, the foreign worker can learn and benefit a lot from the guidance of experienced staff.
  • Implement an inclusive workplace: create a warm and welcoming atmosphere in the workplace specially for the foreign worker in order to make them feel comfortable and integrated in their new working environment. Organize orientation programs for different international  worker for their better understanding of the organization’s culture.
  • Measure the success: is it mandatory to track the foreign workers progress and achievements in order to make sure that is was worth investing in a foreign worker. Celebrating or rewarding in different ways their success will encourage them and motivate them to continue working there.

In order to revive the economy in the provinces of canada, the government has been more lenient and has launched more programs to attract more international graduates, essential workers and French speaking workers. In this case it is necessary for both the employer and the foreign worker to have a general knowledge regarding the hiring process and the retention process.
